This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Ethiopia. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Ethiopia|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Ethiopia. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Africa.

Most of the current sourcing do not even mention this person, or are simple mentions. Searches did not turn up enough in-depth coverage from independent, reliable sources to support meeting WP:GNG. Onel5969 TT me 15:18, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

- Thank you very much for your continuous work on improving Wikipedia and making sure Wikipedia provide correct and factual information for the readers. As far as the concern you provided, All sources validate all the information in this person page and the name can be written in different forms as middle name and last name is usually used interchangeably in Ethiopian culture thus why you might think the person isn't mentioned. The last name might be broken apart to 'Haile' and 'Michael' to be used as Middle name and Last name respectively or Hailemichael is written as H'Michael which is common in Ethiopia. So please reconsider your stance for deletion of page as every source is unbiased and factual. Thank you. Anteneh1990 (talk) 04:22, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

The war is poorly covered in qualitative sources, The contents in the Events section is mostly filled with negotiations with little to no coverage for this war. Failing WP:GNG. Shakakarta (talk) 15:46, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

- Delete: This article is largely unsourced. I tried to search this topic on google books but couldn't find anything substantial. Dympies (talk) 15:59, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Speedy keep and close - Misleading nomination. Gazillions of sources are around that have significantly written about this war.[1][2] [3]Abhishek0831996 (talk) 16:28, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- No need to be so frenzied. 'Gazillions of sources' yet the last two are almost unreliable and first is a WP:NEWSORG tertiary source. Try finding reliable sources. Shakakarta (talk) 17:44, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- The Print article is written by an historian. That said, all of those sources are reliable. They establish WP:GNG. Recommend you to take back your misleading nomination. Abhishek0831996 (talk) 01:59, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Syed Muzaffar Hussain is a politician and the book is published by K. K. publication which is a vanity press. Another one is a self published book by an author named Pramod Kapoor. You need to cite reliable independent sources having more than 2 pages of coverage. Shakakarta (talk) 19:38, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

- Keep: [4][5][6] There seems to be plenty of coverage of the war. The argument made above is extremely vague. It obviously isn't a straight failure of WP:GNG. The unsourced portions are also irrelevant because WP:AFDISNOTCLEANUP. Aintabli (talk) 23:37, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- How did you decide there is plenty of coverage when you only showcased some passing sort keys mentions of "Anglo-Mughal wars" through the engines? Please cite two books having more than 1-2 pages of coverage. Shakakarta (talk) 05:18, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

- Keep: Scholar yields multiple scholarly sources mentioning the Anglo-Mughal war. The article itself provides multiple citations. There appears to be significant coverage of the war in scholarly sources. PadFoot (talk) 12:24, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- Again not this. Passing mentions will be found in abundance; we are here looking for significant coverage, which clearly lacks. Feel free to cite sources having coverage of more than 2 pages. Shakakarta (talk) 19:43, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- Delete: It fails WP:SIGCOV. As stated by user Shakakarta, the sources are poor, and I was not able to find any other sources that provides enough coverage to justify a standalone article. The article itself also seems to be in poor condition, and if no one is willing to improve it by refurbishing, then it would be better to apply WP:TNT. AɭʋaKʰedək (talk) 15:35, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

- Keep Easily meets WP:GNG. The already cited Hasan 1991, Hunt 2017, and Vaughn 2017 are three WP:HISTRS sources containing extensive coverage of the conflict. Pick up any book on the Mughal Empire or the East India Company, and you'll find between several paragraphs and several pages on the subject. Typical are the 6 pages in: Wilson, Jon E. (2016). Declined prod. 5 of the 6 sources are merely databases/results listing. The 6th source when translated is a small 1 line mention of Bedasso and not SIGCOV for meeting WP:SPORTSCRIT. Those arguing keep should supply indepth sources and not invoke NEXIST which has been discounted by many editors and admins in these athlete AfDs. LibStar (talk) 07:26, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

- Keep, I did expand the article just before it was nominated for deletion. Per comment,
"It goes against our ethics on ADL for a nominator to dictate to the community which guidlines they should not invoke in their rationale/votes"
, I don't think it's acceptable to pre-empt valid P&G-based arguments in a nominating statement.
- Per the WP:RS cited in the article, Bedasso was one of Ethiopia's fastest ever sprinters in the 1970s and is still one of their fastest today, and was one of their only Olympic sprinters. A similar article about an Ethiopian sprinter, Negussie Roba, was nominated for deletion, then sources were found and it became a GA. I think a similar amount of sourcing should exist here, but it would be in Ethiopian newspaper archives that we don't have access to right now. --Habst (talk) 13:12, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a reason for keeping. LibStar (talk) 09:25, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
Bedasso was one of Ethiopia's fastest ever sprinters in the 1970s and is still one of their fastest today, and was one of their only Olympic sprinters.
This may be true but not reasons for inherent notability. We need actual sources. LibStar (talk) 09:27, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a reason for keeping. LibStar (talk) 09:25, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect to Ethiopia at the 1972 Summer Olympics - We don't have sources, as admitted above. We have to have sources to write an article. The redirect ATF preserves page history should sources one day become available. Does not pass WP:GNG, WP:NATH nor WP:BASIC. The NEXIST argument is spurious. Sirfurboy
(talk) 13:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect. No evidence of the required IRS SIGCOV sourcing. NEXIST is irrelevant. JoelleJay (talk) 20:25, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect per Sirfuboy. Fails WP:SPORTBASIC, prong 5, which mandates in clear language: "All sports biographies . . . must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources." Here, no such SIGCOV has been presented. A redirect preserves the article history, such that it can be restored if and when SIGCOV is found. The notion that there might (or might not) be SIGCOV of an Ethiopian relay team that did not even finish its preliminary heat in no way trumps the clear and mandatory language of prong 5 quoted above. Cbl62 (talk) 22:19, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect per above, fails WP:NSPORTS. Mere participation does not indicate notability. Superlative language that does not amount to WP:SIGCOV does not show notability.
- @LibStar and Habst: - WP:NEXIST is a perfectly OK argument, but what it says is that so long as a source/sources giving significant coverage exists, then the topic can be notable even if it is not cited in the article, but you still have to show that the source actually exists. It is not sufficient to simply claim that the topic was really famous and so sources must exist as mere fame does not indicate notability. Similarly it is not enough just to point to the potential existence of possible sources and claim "there must be newspaper coverage". The reality is there weren't many newspapers in 1970's Ethiopia - literacy rates in Ethiopia before 1974 were lower than 10%. What newspapers there were wouldn't necessarily have had detailed biographical coverage of Bedasso but may well (as is very common) have only covered the sports events that Bedasso took part in and only mentioned Bedasso in passing without providing any details about him. However, if anyone wants to get access to the Ethiopian Herald archives that are accessible here: [7] they are welcome to confirm this.
- An example of something that might pass WP:NEXIST would be where we know (e.g., from reviews) that a full biography of substantial length of the subject from a reliable and independent publisher exists but we don't have access to it. FOARP (talk) 07:33, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect to Ethiopia at the 1972 Summer Olympics: Subject does not appear to have the needed WP:SIGCOV to meet the WP:GNG. Redirect as a WP:ATD. Let'srun (talk) 01:42, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

the sources are dependent and only one has something similar to deep coverage, but the sources itself is not reliable and independent (this one Ethiopian birthday) other are WP:Trades and nothing similar to significant coverage OatPancake (talk) 13:54, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

- Delete doesn't meet Wikipedia's notability standards, lacking significant coverage from independent, reliable sources.
