Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

  • Use strong, unique passwords for your Wikipedia account and associated email
  • Change your password now if your Wikipedia account password or email password is reused on another website, exposed, or weak
  • Enable two-factor authentication now for improved security

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

An award for you!

I proudly accept the award. If your ESP is working, you should now be seeing me taking my bows. — Maile (talk) 13:15, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was driving to work but I think I felt something--then again maybe I've been playing Tonight's the Night too often. How's it going Maile? Still here after all these years, I see: thank you for that. Ima go see what other AfDs you been in, just to mess with you. Take care! Drmies (talk) 14:37, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maile, it may be the Dutchman in me, but when I look at Hofstra University rape hoax I'm tempted to delete this on the spot as a BLP violation! Drmies (talk) 14:39, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome to look through my edits of anything, as far as I'm concerned. I have no idea what you are getting at here. But there have been a lot of AFDs ... just within the last 12 months. The thing about AFD is, like all of Wikipedia, anybody can join in, regardless if they know WP's complicated, and often conflicting, guidelines on anythig and anybody. And you can often find a WP guideline to justify any direction of something. — Maile (talk) 16:18, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just joking, my friend--but I'm glad I saw that Hofstra thing. You run into these old things and you wonder how they got written up in the first place, and how they managed to stay around. How long do you think our project will last? Drmies (talk) 16:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The overall Wikipedia project? I believe it will out-live me. Judging from the Deceased Wikipedians/2024, Jimbo Wales dreamed up a doozie of international connections when he created Wikipedia. We all have become an international family. — Maile (talk) 20:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Thank you! What a nice gesture. — Maile (talk) 02:35, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

January music

story · music · places

Happy new year 2025, opened with trumpet fanfares that first sounded OTD in 1725 (as the Main page has). Near the end of the month, I have vacation pics to offer and the story of Werner Bardenhewer. I took the pic, and it was my DYK on his 90th birthday, in both English and German. He spent the day in Africa, and after his return said - chatting after a mass of thanks he celebrated at Mariä Heimsuchung - that we'd have to talk about these articles. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:41, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kristina Romanova

Hello Maile66, nice to meet you. Given your active participation and administration of Wikipedia, I'd be grateful for your review of my suggested expansions/additions to Kristina Romanova's BLP. While she is a former model, much of her current work as a CEO and business executive is undocumented in her article. I work for Aman and have declared my affiliation so I can't make these changes without Wiki approval. If you give your approval of these suggestions, I can take the time to implement them in the article. Thank you in advance for your input, Astraea2024 (talk) 11:29, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maile. To respond to your comment, I did offer to help the editor when I first saw the article. (I saw it because of a copyvio they uploaded to Commons, and church architecture is in my wheelhouse so I took a closer look.) They did not respond. The WikiEdu staffer moved the page to user space and the editor moved it right back to mainspace. I don't know what else can be done to help someone who doesn't respond to a friendly message; AfD is the only recourse I know of as a new page reviewer when the page doesn't meet GNG or other standards (this page had lots of copyvios too) and the editor appears unwilling to talk. Do you have an alternative suggestion? Dclemens1971 (talk) 01:37, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there. No suggestions from me. I think you did what you could. — Maile (talk) 01:51, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, just wanted to be sure I hadn't missed a possible step. Dclemens1971 (talk) 02:09, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

it allows categories to be listed under the subject's family name rather than their first or given name.

Moving the needle: (statistics available via Humaniki tool)

Requesting review(s)

Dcw2003 (talk)User dcw2003 requests:

Sorry to ask Maile66, but do you think you could do a quick review of the new page Arthur Albiero? I could also use a review of Ray Daughters who has been available for review for about six weeks. Do you know of anyone else who could do a quick review? I know its not great do ask, but Ray Daughters is an interesting biography of a rather significant American coach. I'm hoping you'll enjoy reading it.

Thanks!!

dcw2003

Albiero is a swim coach, one of the 100 greatest Coaches of the Century and recently released to the Article pages. There are few spelling errors or grammer errors, and the review could be quick.

Thanks again

Dcw2003

Dcw2003 This is out of my range of knowledge to review. I'm not even sure where to send you for this. You might try posting the question at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and asking them where you should go for a review on this. Sorry I could not be of better help to you. — Maile (talk) 01:24, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
