Thrombocytopenic purpura are purpura associated with a reduction in circulating blood platelets.[1]
Types
By tradition, the term idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura has been used when the cause is idiopathic, or unknown. The specific trigger for most cases remains unknown.[2] Whatever the trigger, the condition is now considered to be immune-mediated and the term Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura is more usual. Either of these terms may be abbreviated as ITP.
Another form is thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. This may be abbreviated as TTP.[3]
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on factors including age, duration of symptoms, medications, and underlying medical conditions. [4]
Treatment
Most people with mild ITP do not require treatment. For those that do not resolve and are associated with significant bleeding, infusion of immune globulins, corticosteroids, or splenectomy may be considered. [5]
Treatment of TTP may involve plasma exchange and a chemotherapy medication Vincristine.[6]
