Ali ibn Abi Talib (Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب, strict transliteration: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) (c. March 17, 599 – c. January 22, 661) was one of the companions and was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He succeeded Caliph Uthman as the forth Caliph of Rashidun Caliphate in Sunni Islam and succeeded prophet Muhammad as the fist imam in Shia Islam.
